The Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) in September 2023 organised an intensive 5-day training specifically designed for newly recruited teachers in Dutse, Jigawa State. The focus was on the programme’s inclusive package, which equips teachers with the best approaches and techniques for teaching foundational skills in Primary 1 and 2 in PLANE supported schools within Dutse Local Government Education Authority (LGEA).
Over the course of five intensive days, 200 teachers (138 male and 62 female) received comprehensive training that covered Mathematics and Hausa literacy, using the teachers’ guides and pupil books provided by PLANE. The practical sessions, interactive discussions, and simulations were designed to enable teachers to create a more engaging and inclusive learning environment in their students.
In Nigeria, many primary school teachers face difficulties in effectively teaching foundational skills in subjects like Mathematics and Hausa literacy. This issue not only impacts students’ learning but also hinders their overall educational development. However, with PLANE’s approach and support to government, progress is being made in the state. The training, beyond subject content, included classroom management, formative assessments, and inclusive teaching techniques. The trained teachers are expected to use their new skills and knowledge to foster a better learning experience for their students, ultimately contributing to improved educational outcomes.
This training was a collaborative effort between PLANE, Dutse Local Government Council, and various stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Board and LGEAs. The future looks promising, with better-equipped teachers ready to shape the learning journey of their students and create a brighter future for all.
